Bangalore: Pent-up demand and new offerings from original equipment makers pushed computer hardware sales up by 24% in July-September (third quarter of 2009) over the April-June 2009 quarter, indicating continued improvement in the economic sentiment.
However, sales were down 3.1% when compared with the same quarter in the previous fiscal. As per the latest market survey figures put out by leading IT research firm IDC, computer sales touched 21.9 lakh units, with desktops continuing to stand their ground against notebook PCs with a two-third share and a sequential growth of 15.2% at 14.6 lakh units. However, compared with the same quarter last year desktop sales were down 6%. But, notebooks, including the new generation netbooks, at 7.31 lakh units grew a whopping 46% sequentially and 5% year-on-year primarily on the back of increased demand from the consumersegment. This is the first time notebooks have crossed the 7 lakh unit mark.
